The appearance of the British Shorthair can best be described with the word "round". The breed has a rather stocky figure, which is emphasized by the broad chest and short, strong legs and large, round paws. The short, thick tail is also rounded at the end.
The round head of the British Shorthair with the relatively broad skull sits on a short, powerful neck. The nose is slightly shortened to the snub nose, whereby there are very large fluctuations depending on the line. The large, round eyes are orange or copper, green or blue, depending on the color.
The strong, short and very dense fur with undercoat ensures the teddy look of the British Shorthair in over 70 colors: black, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, white and cream are allowed as colors and patterns can be found in tabby, tortie ( Tortoiseshell), Tipped, Smoked, Bicolour and Colourpoint (with dark face mask).
The British Shorthair is a calm, relaxed and balanced cat with a quiet, unobtrusive voice. Her cosiness and inner calm as well as the attachment to her familiar people make her an extremely pleasant and lovable house and life companion. At first glance, the British Shorthair cat may seem a bit reserved, but with her trusted caregivers she is definitely a cuddly tiger. As with every cat, regardless of its breed, childhood imprints play a crucial role. If the kittens are surrounded by humans and other cats from the start, they become very sociable.
